# Anatomy of a Cracktro

A cracktro is a demo in miniature: a few kilobytes bolted onto a cracked
game
to announce who broke the copy protection. Strip away the bravado and it is
a
beautifully constrained piece of engineering.

## The four organs

Every classic cracktro has the same anatomy:

1. **Logo** — the group's identity. Cycled colours via the Amiga copper, or
a
   sine-wobbled bitmap.
2. **Effect** — the flex. Whatever the coder could squeeze out of the
hardware:
   raster bars, plasma, a dot tunnel.
3. **Scroller** — the words. Greets to friendly groups, jabs at rivals, and
a
   shout to whoever supplied the original.
4. **Music** — a chiptune on loop, hand-tracked, often by a named musician
who
   was as much a star as the coder.

## Why it endures

The cracktro is dead as a delivery mechanism and immortal as an art form. It
taught a generation that code could have a *voice* — that a loader could be
a
signature. That instinct never left the scene; it just moved to 64k intros
and,
eventually, to the web.
